TODT: AS IF
9.25.2008 – 11.8.2008

AREA 919 opens with selected works from TODT. This show provides a careful selection of clean and compact works culled from 25 years of production by one of America’s most prominent art collectives. Few other art groups rival the range and radical output of TODT. Initially formed in New York City in the late 1970’s, TODT began developing its legacy of installations, environments, and product shows in the early 1980’s with exhibitions at PS 1 (1983), PPOW (1984), Lurhing Augustine and Hodes (1985), and The Whitney Biennial (1985). After firmly establishing themselves as leading players in New York’s art scene, TODT exhibited in Los Angeles, Miami, Washington and Tokyo (1985-1990). The 1990’s brought a major relocation of the TODT studios to Cincinnati, where moth-balled American industrial complexes offered greater availability of the military, scientific, agricultural, and industrial materials that had become key to TODT products and environments. During this period, TODT created solo exhibitions at Carl Solway (1992, 1993), MCA Chicago (1992), Galerie Pariser Platz, Berlin (1994), CAC Cincinnati (1995), Indianapolis Museum of Art (1996), Shick Art Gallery, Saratoga Springs (1998) and Art Corpus, Santiago, Chile (1999). The last decade has brought TODT a palette transformed from technological skeletons to dollar store waste and new exhibitions in New York at Sideshow (2001, 2003, 2006), The Lab (2005), and in various venues in Cincinnati (2001-2003). In 2007, TODT had a solo exhibition in Philadelphia at Fleisher Ollman gallery and the Pompidou center in Carjac, France. This year TODT held major exhibitions at the New York Arts Center, Saratoga Springs and les Abattoirs, Toulouse, France. AREA 919 is pleased to have the opportunity to offer this selection of works to Philadelphia’s emerging art community as well as making the full scope of TODT production available to collectors and institutions worldwide. The show will be on view from September 5th through November 8th.

Public Exhibition Hours: Thursday-Friday 12-6PM and Saturday 12-5PM

Business Hours: Monday-Friday 10AM-6PM

Private showings by appointment.
